KMT Waterjet Glass Cutting Detailed Information
From artistic tabletop inlays to detailed stained glass designs, mirrors, glass ornaments, replacement windows for antique cars, and more, there’s almost no glass cutting application that a waterjet cutting system from KMT Waterjet can’t tackle. There are many other benefits to using water jet cutting technology, the same technology behind water jetting, for glasswork. Both thin and thick glass materials can be cut and detailed with a precise cutting stream. And because water jet cutting does not vibrate the glass, produce heat-affected zones, or leave behind rough edges, almost no secondary finishing is required. In addition, water jet cutting’s ability to generate exact, clean cuts with speed make it an efficient cutting process for the majority of glass cutting applications. To learn more about cutting glass with water jets, please see the information provided below.
KMT water only Water jet cutting glass up to 9" thick at Dependable Glass Works and cuts intricate shapes at most any thickness.
When you need reliable water jet cutting solutions, trust KMT Waterjet. The company’s many decades of experience have made it one of the world’s leading sources of high-quality pumps, cutting nozzles, abrasive systems, parts, and more.
Customarily, glass has been a difficult substance to machine but with the soaring popularity of water jet cutting
technology, glass has become an ideal application. The water is mixed with an abrasive, typically garnet, to erode glass in the specified area. Glass materials are typically strong in structure; however, the smallest of scratches can cause severe fractures on the surface. With the cutting edge technology of water jet systems, piercing through various types of glass or refractory materials is astonishingly easy. Each cutting table can perform precise cuts on the most delicate of glass materials as well as the strongest glass materials up to 9” thick without altering any tooling or set up. The cutting stream (approximately 1mm or 0.040”) allows intricate designs in any shape and size and is highly recommended for cut-outs, frameless showers, mirrors and most all architectural needs with close to no pressure from the actual cutting procedure being eroded. The water jet stream is very fine and is capable of producing precision cutting with a jet stream output three times the speed of sound and pressure levels up to 90,000 psi if necessary.

Waterjet cutting technology is becoming the world’s leading choice of machine tool processing among manufacturers. With the adaptability and user-friendly setup of KMT Waterjet’s cutting systems, the limits are nearly endless. KMT is capable of glass cutting by pressurizing water to produce extremely high velocities. The highly pressurized water, up to 90,000psi using KMT Streamline PRO pump, is then focused into a tight stream via a KMT Autoline II or KMT IDE cutting head. This stream of water is then used to pierce and cut varying materials. The process is essentially the same as the natural process of water erosion, found in some of Earth's natural wonders. Water jet technology is reaching new heights in the glass industry with the ability to pierce and cut through forms of glass that normally resist a bullet.
KMT Waterjet cutting has the ability to:
- Cut glass geometry that common machining cannot perform
- Perform cuts on delicate glass without breaking
- Cut through glass up to 9” thick
- Precisely cut thin to thick glass without changing any tooling
- Allow intricate design in any shape and size
- Eliminate pressure of cutting process on surface material
- Generate products at great speeds
- Execute capabilities on varying types of glass
- Not suitable for cutting tempered glass.
- Cost effective means of cutting holes in glass.
- This is an erosion process; not a compression.
